1. The ratio in your child’s classroom — not the school average. Ask for the specific number of children and adults in the room your child would join. School-wide averages hide a lot.

2. How long the class teacher has been there. High teacher turnover is the single most reliable warning sign in early years education. A settled teacher who knows your child is worth more than any facility.

3. What happens between 9am and 12pm. Ask to see a real daily schedule, not a brochure page. At ages 2 to 5, children should be doing things — building, pouring, sorting, moving — not sitting at worksheets.

4. How the school handles a crying child in week one. The answer tells you more about a preschool’s philosophy than any curriculum document. Listen for whether they talk about the child or about the policy.

5. The real hours versus your real hours. A session ending at 12:30pm when your workday ends at 6pm leaves a gap that gets billed as daycare. Check whether the school’s extended hours are genuine or an afterthought.

6. Safety you can see, not safety that is described. CCTV, controlled entry and a named-person pickup protocol should be visible on the tour. Ask who is authorised to collect your child and how that is verified.

7. The total first-year cost, including one-time charges. Ask every school: “What is the total amount I will pay across the first twelve months, including admission fee and deposit?” That single number is comparable across schools. Nothing else reliably is.

The commute test most parents skip

Do this before you shortlist, not after.

Drive the route at 8:30am on a weekday. Not on a Sunday afternoon when you tour the campus. Banaswadi Main Road, the ORR approach and the Kalyan Nagar stretch behave completely differently in peak hours.

Then drive it again at 6pm if you will be using daycare. Evening pickup is often the harder journey.

Ask about the transport route specifically, if the school offers it — not just whether transport exists. A bus that covers your area last means a much longer day for a three-year-old.
